This is reported in iScience. As part of the scientific work, specialists studied blood samples from more than 160 patients who were admitted to hospitals during the first and second waves of coronavirus infection. Experts measured the levels of proteins responsible for the immune response in the blood – cytokines and chemokines. Among other things, the level of 171 microRNAs was analyzed, which shows the extent to which the coronavirus has damaged tissues.
As a result, it turned out that the combination of microRNA and proteins helps to more accurately distinguish severe cases of coronavirus than identifying them separately. In addition, it turned out that the chemokine CCL20, interleukins IL6 and IL10, and miR-451 microRNA are the main indicators of death from COVID-19.
