Ratan Tata Birthday: Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus (Retired) of Tata Sons, is celebrating his 85th birthday today, 28 December. Ratan Tata is not only known as a veteran industrialist, but he is also famous for openly supporting the new emerging startups of the country along with social work. As the chairman of Tata Sons for more than two decades, he took the Tata group to new heights by acquiring giant companies around the world.
Ratan Tata’s Education
Ratan Tata was born on December 28, 1937. His father’s name was Naval Tata and mother’s name was Sunnu Tata. He studied at Champion School in Mumbai till class 8th. After that, apart from the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai, he also received education from the Bishop Cotton School in Shimla. In 1955, he graduated from Riverdale Country School in New York City. And obtained a degree in Architecture and Structural Engineering from Cornell University, USA. In 1975, he completed his management studies from Howard Business School.
Ratan Tata’s career
In 1962, Ratan Tata started his career with Tata Steel. Nine years later, he was made director in the National Radio and Electronics Company. In 1977, he was sent to Impress Mills, a Tata group company which was later closed. In 1991, JRD Tata appointed Ratan Tata as his successor. After that Ratan Tata continuously took the Tata Group to new heights. In 1998, he launched the first indigenous domestic small car, the Indica. In 2008, Ratan Tata also brought Lakhtakia car Nano keeping in mind the middle class in India.
While holding the post of chairman, he also acquired foreign companies ranging from Tetley to Corus, Jaguar-Land Rover. Ratan Tata wanted to step into the field of aviation in the 90s itself, which could not succeed then. Later he launched Vistara and now Air India is again Tata’s which was Ratan Tata’s big dream. Before nationalization, Air India used to be owned by Tata. When Ratan Tata was the chairman, the revenue of the Tata group increased by 40 times and the profits increased by 50 times. Ratan Tata resigned from the post of chairman on 28 December 2012. After that Cyrus Mistry was made the chairman. However, on October 24, 2016, Cyrus Mistry was removed from the post of chairman and Natarajan Chandrasekaran was made the chairman of Tata Sons.
Ratan Tata is a donor
Ratan Tata is one of the veteran philanthropists. His 65 per cent shares are invested in Charitable Trust. In which financial assistance is provided to Indian students studying in Cornell University through the Tata Scholarship Fund. In 2010, he donated $50 million for the construction of the Executive Center at Harvard Business School. In 2014, he also donated Rs 95 crore to IIT Mumbai. During the Corona epidemic, 1500 crore rupees were donated to the government to combat the epidemic and for the management of health services. Ratan Tata’s new personality emerged during the 26 November 2008 Mumbai terror attack. He himself stood outside the Taj Hotel and himself stood outside the hotel to ensure help to the victims. He himself went to the homes of all the 80 hotel employees killed or injured in the attack and met their families. The Taj Hotel Palace was badly damaged in the terrorist attack. But being the chairman of Indian Hotels, a company of the Taj Hotels Group, he got the hotel renovated again.

Ratan Tata has so far invested in more than 30 startup companies. Which includes startups like Ola Electric, Paytm, CarDekho, Snapdeal, Urban Company, Urban Ladder, LensKart and Cure.fit. Ratan Tata invests in his personal capacity or in his events through the company RNT Capital Advisors.
