It is reported that in the framework of experiments on genetically modified rodents, it was found that complications in coronavirus infection occur due to an excessive inflammatory response of the immune system. At the same time, two well-known therapies can be useful in recovery – the use of monoclonal antibodies and the steroid dexamethasone. Antibodies promote recovery only in the initial stages of the disease.
As part of the experiment, a coronavirus was injected into the nasal cavity of animals. Because of this, the mice developed the disease and reached a severe form with its typical manifestations: lung damage, weight loss and an excessive inflammatory immune response. It turned out that the use of the immunosuppressant dexamethasone in the early stages is dangerous. But in the later stages of COVID-19, this drug helped to suppress the inflammatory response, which is fraught with organ damage.
