Specialists of the analytical company IDC summed up the results of the third quarter of 2021 in the equipment market from which the cloud infrastructure is formed. These are the servers, storage, and Ethernet switches used in the deployment of both public and private cloud services.
According to analysts’ estimates, sales of the specified equipment in annual terms increased by 6.6% and reached $18.6 billion. Growth resumed after a short pause in the second quarter, when sales decreased in annual terms by 1.9%. This pause was preceded by seven consecutive quarters of growth starting in the third quarter of 2019. The largest increase — by 38.4% — came in the second quarter of 2020, when the wave of the pandemic dramatically increased demand for non-cloud services.
Spending on traditional non-cloud infrastructure increased by 7.3% in the third quarter of 2021 to $14.6 billion.
According to IDC, spending on cloud infrastructure for the whole of 2021 increased by 8.3% compared to spending in 2020, to $71.8 billion. Of course, the final figures will become known after the analysts sum up the results of the fourth quarter.
In the long term, IDC expects cloud infrastructure spending to grow at a compound annual rate of 12.4% between 2020 and 2025, reaching $118.8 billion in 2025, accounting for 67.0% of total spending. to the infrastructure.
