Electric Cars: Powered Only by Batteries

Electric vehicles (EVs) rely entirely on battery power. These batteries can be lithium-ion or lead-acid types. Charging stations are built specifically for EVs, and they can also be charged at home. Once fully charged, EVs can travel distances ranging from 100 to 400 km, depending on their battery capacity.

However, EV batteries degrade over time and need to be replaced after their lifecycle ends. Significant investment is required to build charging infrastructure for EVs. The upside is that EVs produce no tailpipe emissions, making them completely eco-friendly.

Hybrid Cars: A Combination of Battery and Engine

Hybrid cars feature technology that combines battery-powered electric motors with conventional engines. The two power sources work together to drive the car. A notable advantage is that the battery in a hybrid car charges automatically while driving.

There are two types of hybrid cars:

  • Strong Hybrid: Equipped with a larger battery that can independently power the vehicle in full electric mode. This setup helps save petrol and reduces pollution. At lower speeds, the vehicle seamlessly switches to EV mode.
  • Mild Hybrid: Features a smaller battery that supports the conventional engine to improve fuel efficiency. However, mild hybrids cannot be driven solely in EV mode.

Which Technology is Better?

From an environmental standpoint, electric cars are the more eco-friendly choice since they produce zero emissions. Hybrid cars, on the other hand, still rely on petrol or diesel but offer better mileage due to the EV mode.

One challenge with EVs is the need for charging stations, which are not yet widely available. In contrast, hybrid cars provide more convenience as they do not solely rely on charging infrastructure.

Both technologies have their merits, and the choice depends on individual preferences and infrastructure availability.
