BMW Sustainability Head Monika Dernay is suggesting that motorists keep their cars longer rather than buying new models.
She stated that the automotive industry can reduce waste by encouraging people to keep their existing cars and upgrade them instead of constantly buying new models.
We really need to think about extending the life of cars; not have a used car market where you sell cars to each other but maybe take a car and make it last longer. The idea might be that you can freshen up the interior. We need new skills in the aftermarket and to design cars in such a way that you can remove the seat and install a new seat – then a used car will look like new. It may have the same owner who didn’t buy a new car. And we still have the BMW business model, the whole society benefits from it.
