Bluetooth speakers have learned to track people’s movements using ultrasound

The speaker has been trained to detect movements through ultrasonic technology capable of recognizing people in a user’s home. This is done in order to automatically turn on or off other connected devices, including smart lights or fans.

Sources say the Amazon Echo Dot produces an inaudible ultrasonic wave, thereby reflecting objects. The speaker’s microphone then picks up the reflected waves, thus detecting movement in the room.

The feature can be enabled on fourth-generation Echo and Echo Dot devices using the proprietary Alexa voice assistant. It is noted that the Echo Dot is not the only Amazon gadget to receive this option. Echo Show devices are also capable of tracking people’s movements using ultrasound.
