Battery Safety Standard: Electric vehicle will no longer catch fire! New safety standards will be implemented next month

In the midst of increasing cases of fire incidents in two-wheeler electric vehicles, the Union Ministry of Road Transport has implemented an extra safety provision in the Battery Safety Standard. These norms will come into effect from October 1.

Battery Safety Standard: Amidst increasing cases of fire incidents in two-wheeler electric vehicles, the Union Ministry of Road Transport has implemented an extra safety provision in the Battery Safety Standards. These norms will come into effect from October 1. According to the information given by the ministry, the changes include additional safety requirements related to thermal expansion due to fire from the battery, ‘on-board charger’, ‘battery pack’ and internal cell short circuit.

After the fire in the electric two-wheeler, the government’s move
to make the revised standards mandatory for the electric vehicles of this segment from October 1, 2022, is going on in full swing. It is worth noting that in April this year, cases of fire were reported in electric two-wheelers like Ola Electric, Okinawa Autotech and Pure. In view of these incidents, the government had constituted a committee.

Issued amendments in AIS 156
Based on the recommendations made in the report of the Expert Committee, the Ministry has issued amendments to AIS (Vehicle Industry Standards) 156 on August 29, 2022. These amendments include specific requirements for L-class motor vehicles with electric power trains (engines) and requirements for electric power trains for M-class and N-class motor vehicles.
