[ad_1]

American devices maker Apple has told the Central Government that if the rule of universal charging port for existing iPhones is implemented in the country like the European Union (EU), then its production target will be affected. Preparations are being made to implement the rule to make USB-C charging ports mandatory for smartphones in the country.

Reuters report quoting a government document states that Apple There is lobbying to get relaxation in this rule or to postpone it. The government wants to make it mandatory in the country in June 2025, six months after this rule is implemented in the EU. Almost all smartphone makers including Samsung have agreed to this. However, Apple is not in favor of this. iPhones have used a separate Lightning connector port for years. The EU estimates that the single charging solution will save customers approximately $271 million. This will make it easier to reduce electronic waste in India and will also provide convenience to iPhone users.

Apple, in a meeting with the IT Ministry late last month, had asked officials to exempt existing iPhone models from this rule. The company had warned that if this did not happen, it would find it difficult to meet the production target under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme. PLI is an important project for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In this, incentives are given to electronics manufacturers including smartphone companies in the country for new investments. To take advantage of this scheme, suppliers like Apple’s Foxconn in the country. iPhone Production has been increased.

A request for comment sent by Reuters to the IT Ministry and Apple in this regard has not received a response. Foxconn plans to invest $1.5 billion (about Rs 12,500 crore) in the country. It had also sent Chinese engineers to train workers in its factory in Tamil Nadu. Recently, Foxconn representative in the country had said that the company aims to double its investment and workforce by next year. It wants to diversify its production outside China.
