Apple Mac Studio showed from the inside: a huge chip and a powerful cooler

The author of the YouTube channel Max Tech studied in detail the internal structure of the latest Apple desktop based on the M1 Ultra processor. The video demonstrating the disassembly process is interesting not only by showing the design of the proprietary chip – as it turned out, a couple more surprises await Mac Studio buyers, including the ability to upgrade the PC with their own hands.

To get to the “heart” of the computer, the blogger had to dismantle the service cover on the bottom of the PC case, as well as the power supply without a protective cover. During disassembly, it turned out that there is an unoccupied M.2 slot on the motherboard for installing a drive – this will allow Mac Studio to expand the disk space on its own.

Almost 2/3 of the thickness of the case was occupied by a massive cooling system with two fans, mounted on the motherboard. The dimensions of the latter turned out to be very modest, while an impressive part of its area is occupied by the M1 Ultra chip itself, covered with a heat distribution plate. It is almost four times larger than the desktop AMD Ryzen – such dimensions are due to the placement of memory chips right around the CPU.

Despite the huge area, only a narrow strip in the center of the SoC, where the processor and graphics adapter crystals are located, contacts the heatsink through the thermal interface. The author of the video also noted that the main drive can also be upgraded – unlike a number of other Apple products, it is not soldered on the board, but is made in a traditional form factor with a PCI-Express interface.

Apple Mac Studio starts at $1,999 for a base configuration with 32GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.
