Apple Halts Foldable iPad Plans, Focus Shifts to Foldable iPhone Launch by 2026

Apple’s Foldable iPad Project Halted! Foldable iPhone Enters Testing Phase

Apple is reportedly working on a foldable iPad, but new developments suggest the project has been temporarily paused. A recent report by DigiTimes has shed light on Apple’s updated strategy in the foldable device segment.

Foldable iPad Project Halted

According to supply chain sources, Apple has temporarily halted work on its foldable iPad due to production challenges and high manufacturing costs. The company was developing a large-screen foldable device, which some referred to as a foldable iPad, while others described it as an all-display MacBook.

However, issues such as difficulty in producing large, crease-free foldable OLED displays — especially at Apple’s high quality standards — have led to the pause. The company is also reportedly uncertain about the consumer demand for foldable tablets, given their expected high price. The device was rumored to feature an OLED display between 18.8 inches and 20.2 inches, and was expected to launch sometime between 2026 and 2028.

Foldable iPhone Prototype Enters Testing

While the foldable iPad is on hold, Apple’s foldable iPhone project is moving forward. The device reportedly reached the P1 prototype phase in June 2025 and is expected to enter the Engineering Verification Test (EVT) phase by early 2026.

Leaks suggest that the foldable iPhone will feature a 7.8-inch OLED display supplied by Samsung. It is expected to include a side-mounted Touch ID scanner and a titanium alloy frame with a liquid metal hinge for increased durability. Apple is aiming to minimize the visibility of the crease in the display. The foldable iPhone is likely to launch in September 2026, with an estimated price between $2,100 (around ₹1,79,000) and $2,300 (around ₹1,96,000).
