There are two types of anthrax toxins – edema toxin and deadly toxin. Both toxins share a key protein called PA (protective antigen). PA can be compared to a Trojan horse that helps transport either edema factor (EF) protein or lethal factor (LF) protein into the cell.
A new study has demonstrated how an edema toxin (composed of PA and EF) can selectively target and silence pain-signaling neurons in the dorsal root ganglion. Experiments in mice have shown that when these two proteins are injected into the spine of animals, they effectively target specific neurons in the brain and block pain sensations.
“In the future, it will be possible to think about different types of proteins for the delivery of drugs inside the body directly ”, Scientists say.
