AMD is building an AI training processor for Microsoft. Athena will make Microsoft less dependent on Nvidia

AMD is working with Microsoft to develop a specialized processor for training artificial intelligence.

The codename for the chip is Athena. This is some kind of specialized AI chip, but there are no technical details yet. Perhaps it is based on the GPU or hybrid processor, as in the Instinct MI300.

Microsoft needs its own processors for AI training, as this area is developing by leaps and bounds, and now the company, like many others, has to rely on Nvidia accelerators. At the same time, Microsoft’s competitors in the face of Amazon and Google have their own hardware solutions for AI training.

Unfortunately, there are also no details about when such processors will be ready.
