New Delhi. On February 2 this year, when the meta platforms reported a decline in Facebook’s daily users in the first quarter. The same day the US tech group posted the findings of its own research in Facebook Business in India. The company identified various problems and bottlenecks in the study conducted over two years till the end of 2021. According to meta research, many women have left the social network because they were concerned about their safety and privacy. META cannot succeed in India leaving women behind.

According to the research, other constraints include nudity content, perceived complexity of app design, local language, literacy barrier and lack of appeal among internet users seeking video content. This research was based on a survey of thousands of people. About the study, a META spokesperson said that the company invests and generates regular internal reports to better understand the value of its product and identify ways to improve it, but the 7-month-old research is being conducted in India. The portrayal of the state of our business is misleading.

META’s chief financial officer Dave Wehner on February 2 with analysts to discuss results for the final quarter of 2021 did not cite the Indian issues outlined in the research. Wehner said the growth of Facebook users in the Asia-Pacific and some other regions was fueled by competition. He described the high mobile data cost as a unique headwind for India.

Research has said that India has more Facebook users than any other country. Here in the last decade, the number of users was estimated at about 450 million. In such a situation, the company should clearly consider its strategic position and growth opportunities in India.

family does not allow facebook
According to an internal study, most families do not allow women to use Facebook. This is a major problem that Facebook has tried to fix for years in India. Last year, men accounted for 75% of the monthly active users of Facebook in India. The study noted that although there is a gender imbalance in internet usage across India, the imbalance is evident even among Facebook users. Behind this is online security concerns and societal pressures.

Nude content was seen by female users
Researchers found that 79% of female Facebook users expressed concern about misuse of content/photos, while 20-30% of total users saw nudity on the platform within the past seven days in a largely conservative country. In the United States and Brazil, about 10% of users surveyed said they had seen nudity in the past week.

negative content trends in india
The internal report states that negative content is more prevalent in India than in other countries. The study found that there is a high level of family disapproval of Facebook, which prevents women from using Facebook.

Gender imbalance is an industry-wide problem
A META spokesperson said that online gender imbalance is an industry-wide problem and is not unique to its platform. He said that since 2016 META had quadrupled the size of the global team working on safety and security to more than 40,000, and more than 97 percent between January and April of this year before anyone reported it. Adult nudity and sexual activity content was removed.

Benefit from lock profile feature
According to the report, after the introduction of the lock profile feature, the comments of unknown people on the pictures of women have stopped. As of June 2021, the feature was adopted by 34% of female users in India, but more work was needed with bold product changes to address the problem of low Facebook usage among women.

criticism of facebook
Facebook has faced global criticism from online safety campaigners for not taking adequate steps to protect women from harassment. In 2019, the platform said it has a team of people focusing only on making sure we keep women safe. This team is using technology tools to remove content deemed unsafe.

profile filter feature
A Meta spokesperson said it had launched a Women Safety Hub and other privacy features such as profile filters to help female users in India stay safe online. Meta said that from 2021 onwards, more than 45% of Facebook groups related to entrepreneurship in India have been created by women.

decline from last year
According to internal research, the growth of Facebook in India started slowing down from last year. According to the report, the platform has been trying to connect with friends and family, while non-Facebook users were mainly using the Internet to view photos and videos. Its annual growth rate based on May-October 2021 shows that it was adding just 6.6 million users per year, while WhatsApp added 71 million and Instagram 128 million.

Facebook had 447 million users
As of November last year, Facebook had 447 million users in India. Whereas WhatsApp, which Facebook acquired in 2014, had 563 million Indian users. Instagram had 309 million purchased in 2012. A Meta spokesperson declined to comment on the number of users.
