Progress in military technology cannot be stopped: traditional weapons systems are being replaced by advanced ones, including laser ones. For example, the US Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class destroyer lost its traditional cannon – instead, a HELIOS laser emitter developed by Lockheed Martin was installed.
A 60-kilowatt laser was installed aboard the ship a few weeks ago. It is placed on a platform originally intended for the 20-mm Vulcan cannon of the Mark 15 Phalanx CIWS naval anti-aircraft artillery system.
Reportedly, the laser system can blind the optical systems of enemy aircraft and ships. The power is relatively small, but such a system is quite capable of shooting down small drones and destroying boats. Lockheed Martin has already agreed with the US Navy to install another HELIOS emitter on a second Arleigh Burke-class ship.
