Meta Income Tax: Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has revealed that it paid ₹5,993 crore (approximately $652 million) in income tax to the Indian government in 2025. This amount is the net figure after adjusting for tax refunds. Globally, the company paid a total of $7.57 billion in taxes, with India’s contribution being quite significant. This figure reflects Meta’s strong presence in India’s rapidly growing digital market.
In its report, Meta stated that India was among the largest tax-contributing countries for the company in 2025. According to the company, both its earnings and investments are continuously growing in markets with large user bases like India.
Growing Regulatory Challenges in India
Along with the tax information, Meta also acknowledged that it is facing several legal and regulatory challenges in India. The company specifically mentioned the 2021 WhatsApp privacy policy update, which is still under investigation by several courts and government agencies.
In addition, cases regarding data sharing between Facebook and WhatsApp are pending before the Competition Commission of India (CCI) and the Supreme Court. Meta clarified that it is filing legal appeals against these decisions and is trying to present its case strongly.
Threat to Future Earnings
Meta warned that if it is prevented from transferring data between countries or sharing information between its platforms—such as Facebook and WhatsApp—it could seriously impact its services. The company says this would not only affect the user experience but also hinder targeted advertising, potentially leading to a decrease in its revenue.
Citing strict digital regulations in countries like India and Germany, the company stated that if it fails to comply with rules such as removing objectionable content or cooperating with investigative agencies, it could face heavy fines or even have its services banned. Could WhatsApp’s policies become a major problem?
Meta fears that ongoing legal investigations and regulatory scrutiny in India could impact its business model in the future. In particular, issues related to WhatsApp’s privacy policy could affect the company’s operations and revenue. Therefore, the coming period is considered crucial for Meta in a large market like India.
