The demand for reliable broadband is accelerating the development of the fixed wireless access (FWA) market, which, coupled with the rollout of 5G networks, is driving the rapid growth of 5G FWA equipment shipments. According to the forecast of analytical company ABI Research, in the next year the volume of 5G FWA equipment, designed for installation on the customer’s side, will more than double compared to the current year and reach 6 million units.
While fiber optic (FTTH) access is the optimal solution for broadband connectivity, the high cost and time required to deploy FTTH pose challenges for operators.
“Deploying 5G FWA services requires shorter time-to-market and lower costs than running fiber to end-user homes and businesses. Therefore, network operators are using 5G as a powerful tool to deliver high-speed, low-latency broadband services in a shorter timeframe, fueling the growth of the 5G FWA market, ”said ABI Research analyst Khin Sandi Lynn.
North America and Western Europe are now leading in 5G FWA deployments. Operators in these regions are positioning 5G FWA as an alternative to DSL.
