2022 Renault Chiger Review: What changes have the company made in this model, know how much better it has become

One of the SUV sub-segments is also the sub-compact crossover segment, which continues to be a popular choice amongst the customers. Renault Kyger is present in the market as a bestseller in this segment. It is one of those vehicles which is being sold with a long list of features, good performance and affordable price.

Now Renault India has introduced the 2022 Renault Chigger in the market with only a few updates. These updates are really just aesthetic and the chigger has been kept mechanically the same. We drove the new Renault Chiger to the beautiful places of Kerala to see how it is. Read on to know more.

2022 Renault Chiger – Design and Style

This is the area of the Renault Kyger, in which the company has made the most changes. As a biggest update, the company has given a new exterior color option in it, which has been introduced in the name of Stealth Black. Some exterior elements have also been added to the new Renault Kyger.

On the front, it gets the same fascia as the 2021 model. It has a split headlamp setup which is rapidly gaining popularity. LED DRLs flank the unique grille with chrome trim. The Renault logo is bigger and is spread across the bonnet space as well. The bumper gets LED headlamps and a new skid plate at the bottom.

Talking about the side profile, the badging of the turbo variant is seen here. Apart from this, the 16-inch alloy wheels definitely deserve your attention. Some may feel that Renault has over-extended the design on the alloy wheels, while others may find it premium and stylish.

The Renault Kyger gets all-round body cladding, while the rear-end is quite simple and streamlined. The Renault logo has once again been given prominence. The unique C-shaped LED tail lamps are still very much present and the chigger now looks a lot better in the stealth black shade.

2022 Renault Chiger – Cockpit and Interior

The Renault Chiger is naturally one of the most stylish cars in the segment and this style has been retained in the interiors of the car as well. However, that’s not really what you get when you open the chunky door handles and open the door. The interiors have all the features you would expect from a car in this segment, however, it could get some more styling.

Right in front of the driver is a 3-spoke steering wheel with mounted controls for audio and cruise control. Behind the steering wheel is a digital instrument cluster. There is a 7-inch TFT screen at the center which displays the various gauges and gives a lot of information to the driver. The temperature gauge is on the left side of the screen and the fuel gauge is on the right.

Center level on the dashboard is an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It is quite comfortable and easy to operate. Below the screen are the central AC vents and below them are the controls for air-conditioning. There are also in-built LCD screens with three dials used for adjusting the temperature, fan speed and AC mode. It’s a really nice touch and something we really liked.

Below the AC control is a start/stop button and a USB port as well as an aux-in port. You also get a wireless smartphone charger and what makes it unique is that there is a power on/off button for the wireless charger. This simply means that the phone can be kept there, whether it needs to be charged or not.

The styling on the door pad is really cool with a unique door handle. You get red fed dashboard accents and red stitch interior. Overall, the Renault Chiger looks great on the inside. This is certainly not the most stylish interior, but it is very practical and functional.

2022 Renault Kyger – Practicality, Comfort and Boot Space

Renault has always sold cars that are practical, comfy and functional on the inside and stylish on the outside and the Kieger is no different. The seats are really comfortable. The driver’s seat gets height adjustment. These seats also get a good amount of bolting on the sides to keep the riders in place.

There are no complaints here when it comes to the front seats. However, the headroom at the rear and the support under the thigh could have been better. Legroom and knee-room are very good and we can use the Renault Kyegger for long drives without any fatigue. The rear passengers also get fold-down armrests with adjustable headrests, dedicated AC vents and cupholders.

The Renault Cayger has several cubbyholes that passengers can use. Be it two gloveboxes up front, cupholders in the center console, storage space under the front armrests, or door pads, the Renault Kyger offers a lot of practicality. The boot-space of the Kieger is one of the largest in the segment. With a 405-litre capacity, the boot can hold a lot of luggage.

2022 Renault Chiger – Engine Performance & Driving Impressions

As mentioned earlier, the Renault Kyger remains mechanically unchanged. It is still being offered in the same engine options. The base powertrain option gets the Energi 1.0-litre petrol engine. This is a 999cc, 3-cylinder engine that churns out maximum power output of 71bhp at 6,250rpm and 96Nm of peak torque output at 3,500rpm. It can be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT.

At the same time, a more powerful engine is also available in it. This is a 999cc turbocharged petrol engine and this engine outputs 98.6bhp power at 5,000rpm and 152Nm of torque between 2,200 – 4,400rpm. This engine can be mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or a CVT gearbox.

The car we drove was equipped with a turbo-petrol engine and a CVT gearbox. The engine offers great performance, but we had to try a manual gearbox instead of a CVT. No complaints with CVT. It works just as a CVT should, and CVT gearboxes are less flashy than we were wishing a manual was.

If a flashy drive isn’t your priority and you only need a Renault Kyger to get from point A to point B, a CVT works great. However, we will opt for the manual variant that we have tried earlier.

The Renault Kyger has a stiffly sprung suspension setup. As a result, bumpy roads will see you moving quite slowly. The rigid suspension also means that the Renault Kyger handles very well, while body roll is present, albeit very well controlled. The brakes are adequate and do their job very well.

Overall, the Renault Chiger has a very likable engine. However, the CVT reduces it considerably. Other than that, no complaints and the Renault Kyger remains a good drive.
