140 meters: Designed the world’s longest battery

Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have created a flexible battery using a standard fiber-making system in which all the necessary components are placed in a large cylinder and heated to just below their melting point. The materials are then pushed through a narrow opening that compresses them to a fraction of their original diameter.

The design differs from previous developments in the field in that key materials such as lithium are structured on the inside of the fiber and a protective coating is applied to the outside, the team said.

The resulting battery is said to be much thinner and more flexible than previous designs and, when stretched to 140 meters, is the longest flexible battery in the world.

Although the length of 140 meters is impressive, “There is no obvious upper limit to the length, we could definitely make the length in a kilometer. “– says one of the authors of the study.
