12 cores from AMD are much more efficient than 16 cores from Intel. Mobile AMD Ryzen 9 7845HX is faster than desktop Intel Core i9-12900K

AMD’s position in the segment of serious gaming laptops is not as strong as that of Intel, but this does not negate the fact that the latest processors of the “red” Dragon Range line turned out to be very successful. And here is another confirmation of this: the 12-core mobile AMD Ryzen 9 7845HX was faster than the desktop 16-core Intel Core i9-12900K in the Geekbench 6 benchmark.

The laptop of the Chinese brand Mechrevo was tested, in addition to the Ryzen 9 7845HX itself, its configuration included the Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 Laptop 3D accelerator (the model was not specified) and 32 GB of DDR5-4800 RAM.

The CPU in the benchmark earned 2697 points in a single-threaded test and 15039 points in a multi-threaded one. And if in the multi-threaded test the result is exactly like that of the desktop Core i9-12900K, then in the single-threaded test, the AMD CPU even turned out to be about 6% faster. In general, the difference in performance is not high, but the efficiency attracts attention, because the same performance is achieved with different consumption: in the case of an AMD CPU it is 50-60 W, in the case of a Core i9-12900K it is 125 W and higher (up to 250 W).

And if we compare the AMD CPU with the mobile analogue of Intel? And here, too, the advantage is on the side of the “reds”: the 16-core is inferior in performance (2450 points in a single-threaded test, 14,200 points in a multi-threaded one), but it can consume more than 100 watts.

In general, both the AMD Ryzen 9 7845HX in particular and the Dragon Range in general turned out to be successful processors, the only question is whether AMD can supply them to partners sufficiently so that laptops based on them are not uncommon.
